Developers and city and state officials Tuesday celebrated the start of work on one of the biggest housing developments yet to hit the Seaport District.

Governor Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh were on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking of Echelon Seaport, a three-tower, 1.3 million-square-foot condo and apartment project being developed by California-based Cottonwood Management.

Cottonwood is bringing in Taiwan-based Regent Hotel Group to manage the buildings, and has designed a series of courtyards and a central plaza lined with retail and restaurants.
